"Generosity" - My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic,Music,,"Generosity" from the episode "Rarity Takes Manehattan" of "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" (S04E08). (DOWNLOAD LINK BELOW). For the reprise of this song, see the "Other Versions" section below.) --Overall Comments-- After two years, we get a Rarity episode! And boy did it deliver. It's great seeing this episode highlight many of the character's elements which the still embody, most noticeably Rarity and Applejack. Plus, getting to see modern-day Manehattan was fantastic--its always great to see what new locations come out of the designer's heads. The episode also brought us some great new characters, and a rather large selection of new background city ponies, not to mention the Mad Men references. And of course, how could we forget the third song of the season, appropriately titled "Generosity" and it's fantastic reprise. Overall, this was another great episode from season 4! --Track Specific Comments-- Ponies just bursting into song in random places at the drop of a hat...WHO DOES THAT?! Rarity, obviously. Here we have the third song of season 4, appropriately titled "Generosity." Rarity and the rest of the Mane 6 are in Manehattan so Rarity can participate in a fashion design competition. Rarity sings about how generosity can improve peoples day, and many times, it comes back around to you. Overall, a fantastic message it's too bad more people don't follow. The song itself is a more contemporary musical style, with some very fun inspiration from "big band" music which always screams "New York" or "big city." I am a huge fan of musicals, and I always enjoy it when Ingram and team bust out the broadway-style songs such as this one. It's something that this show does really well, and is really unique to it in terms of cartoons nowadays. Any songs in cartoons today, if any, are usually more modern rock/pop, and are usually done tongue-in-cheek, meaning that the musical sequence is supposed to be a joke. MLP, as shown here, takes its musical numbers seriously, with them usually moving the story a long, or expressing emotions that just spoken dialogue would not be able to convey, such as in this case. This is one of the things I love most about this show. The song itself has a similar style to many musicals for recent times as well as late 80s/90s. "Good Morning Baltimore" from Hairspray, "Downtown" from Little Shop of Horrors come to mind in terms of similar style and content. The final chorus of "Defying Gravity" from Wicked also comes to mine, manly due to the percussion section of the chorus of this song. Plus, you've gotta love the Big Band/piano ragtime at 1:45. Daniel Ingram listed some of Frank Sinatra's music as inspiration also, and this section does bring "New York, New York" to mind. My favorite part of this song, however, has to be the percussion, particularly the overall rhythm of it during the chorus. The cymbal and snare hits are impossible for me not to motion along with my hands. The entire percussion part of this song really give it that contemporary musical feel which I love. And how could I not comment of Kazumi Evans who consistently knocks it out of the park with Rarity's singing voice? She does absolutely fantastic here! Its definitely been too long since the last Rarity-heavy song. (Watch in 1080p!)
